SAMPLE AP ARTIST STATEMENT 5 SCORE
As transitions in my own life took place, I began to explore the path one takes in forming identity- first influenced by internal forces (biological), and later influenced by external forces (experiences and observations of one’s environment). The influences on identity are internal or external, biological or environmental, disregarded or contemplated, and always changing In images 1, 2, and 3 I used abstract shapes to represent human biology (cells, a hand, and a heart) to illustrate how early in life, an individual is influenced mainly by nature. In images 4, 5, 6, and 7 I used portraiture to depict how one’s self image develops naturally and affects identity, as shown by the symbol of the thumbprint in image 7. In image 8 I began to incorporate bird and flight imagery, relating self to the environment, a topic further explored in images 9, 10, and 11. With graphic shapes in image 9 I created a metaphor of an individual developing a stronger sense of self by departing from a chaotic environment and entering a secluded one. To express the idea that influences and changes to identity are constant, I created image12; the birds surrounding the girl symbolize gaining more independence in the future, causing identity to develop further. Therefore, my work demonstrates the progression and transitions that take place while one forms an identity
