Carleton Watkins is the accidental founding father of the conservationist movement. In the 1800's Watkin's photographs of Yellowstone /Yosemite came across the desk of President Abraham Lincoln. A landscape of this magnitude had not been seen by the average American at this time. Whether for profit (tourism) or for the greater good it was determined that Yosemite should be preserved and thus the first National Park was created.
For this unit students are asked to think about spaces of places of personal significance to them. What is space is with preserving in your mind? Students are required to photograph 2 rolls (1 Digital + 1 Film) ,thoughtfully recording not just the space but the memories and experiences surrounding it. |
